PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support) at NRHEG Schools
Improving student academic and behavior outcomes is about ensuring all students have access to the most effective and accurately implemented instructional and behavioral practices and interventions possible. PBIS provides an operational framework for achieving these outcomes. PBIS is a decision- making framework that guides selection, integration, and implementation of the best evidence-based academic and behavioral practices for improving important academic and behavior outcomes for all students. NRHEG schools is in its eighth year of implementation and will continue to build upon last year’s program.
As part of our PBIS process, teachers and other staff members use evidence-based practices to increase student learning and decrease classroom disruptions. To keep students on task in a positive manner, we do the following when teaching academics and behavior:
∙ Constantly teach and refer to our school wide expectations.
∙ Provide students with more praise than corrections
∙ Talk to students with respect using positive voice tone.
∙ Actively engage everyone in the class during instructions
∙ Use pre-correcting, prompting, and redirecting as we teach.
∙ Look for the positive first and provide positive, immediate, frequent, and explicit feedback.
Our PBIS program at NRHEG Elementary is guided by six important principles:
*Develop a continuum of scientifically based behavior and academic interventions and supports.
*Use data to make decisions and solve problems.
*Arrange the environment to prevent the development and occurrence of problem behavior.
*Teach and encourage pro-social skills and behaviors.
*Implement evidence-based behavioral practices with fidelity and accountability.
*Screen universally and monitor students’ performance and progress continuously.What can you do to help your child stay on the path to Positive Behavior?
Together, the home, school and community share the responsibility for developing good citizens. Parents, teachers and students must work together to maintain a safe learning environment. Parents can help by doing the following:
- Reinforce the expectations.
- Keep in touch with your child’s teacher.
- Encourage your child to use appropriate language.
- Practice caring phrases with your child such as “Thank you”, “Excuse me”, “Please”, and “I’m sorry”.
- Join with other parents for PTO meetings and other school activities.
