Minnesota Education Credits
Have you heard about the Minnesota K-12 Education Credits?
If not, you may be missing out on money you’re entitled to. These credits can lower your tax bill, and even mean a larger refund when you file your Minnesota Income Tax return.
Two programs to help you pay for school expenses. Minnesota has two programs to help families pay expenses to their child’s education: the K-12 education subtraction and the K-12 education credit. The subtraction and credit are both based on the actual expenses you paid during the year to help your dependent child’s K-12 education, so keep your original receipts for educational instruction and materials, showing how much you spent. You’ll need them in order to receive these credits and subtraction.
What kind of expenses qualify? Most expenses paid for educational instruction or materials used during the normal school day qualify, including: school supplies (pencils, pens, notebooks, folders, etc.), tutoring fees, fees for after school enrichment programs, summer academic camp tuition, music lessons and musical instrumental rental, home computer hardware and educational software, and non-religious textbooks. Public, private, parochial or qualified home school expenses qualify.
